Radically new series of engines for heavy trucks and tractors appeared on the market in 1970. The emergence of 400 series engines was caused by the need to implement the decision of the German Federal Ministry of Transport of 1968, according to which since 1972 new vehicles were required to have engine capacity of 6 kW (8 hp) per ton of total weight of the train. This decision was crucial for technology that should pull heavy trailers (truck and tractors). Mercedes-Benz began to develop qualitatively new series of engines in 1969.
1. Engine Mercedes OM 401
The diesel engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz is a four-stroke with a volume of 9572 cubic centimeters, corresponding to approximately 575 cubic inches. It belongs to 400 series of engines, which emplement 300 series, and began its developement in 1969 after the directive of Federal Department of Transportation due to the minimal power of 8 hp per tonne of total mass of the transport, which moves around Germany.
OM401 engine is the first generation of V6 diesels 400 series, released in 1975 and developing the capacity of 141 kW (192 hp). Most of the engines were produced for export. OM 401 is the smallest among V-engine of 400 series, but it also has turbocharger and high fuel efficiency.
This engine is designed with consideration of environmental norms Euro II. OM 401 is very popular and widely used since the 1980s in road engineering and average tonnage trucks. OM 401 is also used in combine harvesters, including combine harvesters CLAAS Lexion 460.

2.Engine Mercedes OM 421
Four-stroke diesel engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz with a volume of 10,965 cubic centimeters, corresponding to approximately 657 cubic inches. It’s a second generation of V6 diesel engine, appeared in 1980 and was equipped with intercooler, develope the capacity of 190 kW (253 hp). Most of the engines were produced for export. As OM 401, it’s is the smallest V-engine of 400 series, but also has a turbocharger and intercooler.
This engine is designed with consideration of environmental norms Euro II. OM 421 is very popular and widely used since the 1990s in road engineering and average tonnage trucks. OM 421 is also used in combine harvesters, including combine harvesters CLAAS Commandor 115 CS.

3. Engine Mercedes OM 421 A
Four-stroke diesel engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz with a volume of 10,965 cubic centimeters (657 cubic inches). Engine OM 421 A was released in 1980 and effectively replaced the predecessor - OM 401 A. Most of the engines were produced for export. As OM 401 it is the smallest among V-engine 400 series, but also has a firm turbocharger and intercooler.
This engine is designed with consideration of environmental norms Euro II. OM 421 A is very popular and widely used since the 1990s in road engineering and average tonnage trucks. OM 421 A is also used in combine harvesters, including combine harvesters New Holland TF44.

4. Engine Mercedes OM 422
The diesel engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz is a four-stroke and with a volume of 14618 cubic centimeters, corresponding to 875 cubic inches. It belongs to a series of engines - 400, which added a series of 300 and began to develope in 1969. Specifically, the OM 422 was released in 1980 and replaced the predecessor - OM 402 A, with a similar V8-cylindrical design gave 155 hp.
These engines belong to 400 series and designed taking into account the environmental norms Euro II. OM 422 engine was the first diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz for heavy commercial vehicles, which was equipped with intercooler. OM 422 engines are very popular and widely used since the early 1990s in road engineering and average tonnage trucks. OM 422 is also used in combine harvesters, in particular, in the combine harvester CLAAS Commandor 116 CS

6. Engine Mercedes OM 443
The diesel engine manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. The engine is the OM 443 four-stroke with a volume of 10,965 cubic centimeters, corresponding to approximately 657 cubic inches. It belongs to a 400 series of engines, which completed the 300 series and began to develope in 1969, and after the adoption of the directive of Federal Ministry of Transport due to the minimal power of 8 hp per tonne of total mass of transport that moves around Germany. V-shaped 6-, 8- and 10-cylinder engines of the new 400 series made this task. The first generation of V10 diesels of 400 series, which was published in 1970, designated as the OM403 and developed capacity of 235 kW (320 hp), the next generation of V10 diesels of Mercedes-Benz production was introduced by OM 443 engine, which generates 245 kW (330 hp).
This engine is designed with consideration of environmental norms Euro II. OM 443 is very popular and widely used since the early 1990s in road engineering and average tonnage trucks. OM 443 is also used in combine harvesters, including combine harvesters CLAAS Commador 228CS.
